What model is the black English dressage type saddle?

How about if the saddle is too tight? I thought that would also make the saddles slide forward..

Greetings from NZ! I have so many questions, however I'll keep it down to four. First of all, my show jumper had a year off (whom successfully jumped to 1.20m before his break), so now his saddles are too small/tight/ill-fitting. I can work him in another horse's dressage saddle and an exercise (race) saddle at the current time, however I'm going to need a new jump saddle anyway - I took my jump saddle to a saddle maker to check its integrity, who said it would maybe last us a couple of seasons at most, but as usual, many things he said contradict the "new scientific philosophies" of more "modern" saddle makers. In your opinion (presuming the saddle fit both myself and my horse): 1) Is a synthetic tree or a wooden tree better? (Whilst synthetic can supposedly have more "give", does that make it prone to weakening and even busting?) 2) When it comes to girth straps, is rigid leather (with no give whatsoever) better than softer, suppler leather? (The saddle fitter I saw adamantly believed in the former, but the leather he showed me was so rigid it barely had any bend, if any). 3) Wool flock, synthetic flock or a mix? And 4) As a slim 5'3" female rider, is a "narrow twist" seat a suitable or even essential feature in the saddle? (I've heard they're better for small females...) But wait.. most English brands tell you to measure gullet size three fingers BEHIND the shoulder which is narrower than right by the shoulder. Point being that the bar should be out of the way totally for the shoulder. Or am I missing something?

This live was absolutely amazing with lots of education about the differences in female structure, as riders how we can improve symmetry but also have in mind the possible structures in horses that we can’t really do anything about but accommodate the saddle for the horse. I absolutely recommend these videos for everyone to watch because there is lots of information here I never learned from my professionals & the struggles I had with my seat as a rider has been answered in detail by Jochen who has done all the work to question saddlefit & now educate us, especially females about the struggles we might have from improper saddlefit & gender specific saddles. As consumers we have to make it a standard for saddle makers to accommodate us females so that we can ride just as easily as males because of the right gender saddle fit. // Mikaela

Hi, Really disappointed that I wasted 3/4 of an hour trying to ask a question on youtube whilst this ran live; to no avail. I was able to write the question, but the arrow to post was a grey colour, not blue and it would not respond when hit. Pressing ënter" did not work either. This is not the first time this has happened to me. I tried refreshing the page countless times. Consequently, I missed most of what was being shown on the actual video, although I could listen. I will now have to spend another hour of my day watching. You also read out questions you were getting on youtube and they were not visible to me. There were only 5 questions I could read. One was posted whilst I was trying to post. I had 2 questions: 1. if the new gullet plate is in narrow position, (by the laws of physics) it will lie further down the shoulders than a wide horse/pony. Will this effect the slipping of a saddle on a wide horse as there will be less length to the points? 2. The printable fitting thing looks to sit on the top of the wither, touching it. That is then put onto the card that sits into the gullet to the very top of the saddle. My question is, when you fit it onto the horse, you want a gap of 4 or so inches, so how does that equate when it is fitted to sit directly on the horse? I have always queried this for all recommended saddle fitting that uses a tracing system.

I was wondering If you or any of your saddle fitters have ever seen any white hair markings from inappropriate fitting saddles or issues with saddle pads/ thick saddle pads Causing rubbing or friction especially in the wither angle shoulder area that are actually in the shape of the quilting of the saddle pad?

QUESTION FOR NEXT WEEK: Would Schleese ever consider making a bit-less bridle? I've been experimenting with one on my nonGP horse with some good results and wonder again at the biomechanical necessity of bits. I know it's a controversial subject, but would Dr Schleese have a view on the importance of bits?

What companies apart from Schleese make gender specific saddles? I have not seen any advertised in NZ. When buying second hand, what is a good silhouette seat and flap shape to look for for a saddle for a female? Are partial trees helpful? One company advertises the points of their trees are soft enough to move away from the shoulder blade, but the rider is supported in the centre. Is this putting too much pressure under the centre of the seat, or is it a good compromise for short backed, big shouldered horses? Their cantle also is hinged somehow? Is this a just a gimmick or is it harmful?

Question on notice: Would Dr Schleese be prepared to give us a reading list of his favourite books on horse and/or rider biomechanics? I have read Dr Herschmann's books many times and love them but would love recommendations on other science-based books. Really enjoyed today's podcast. Thank you.

Ah...now I see why the saddle has to fit the rider first. It makes sense; an uncomfortable rider can't follow the motion of the horses back. I only wish courses in saddle fit had been available when I was an undergraduate. 🤨
